Wellness Wednesdays
Throughout the semester, Counseling Services will be posting tips and videos to boost your mental and physical health!
This week, we want to bring you a quick coping technique: Positive Affirmations. The use of affirmations is a great technique to use when you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, especially during a hectic week like finals week coming up in a couple of weeks!
The sentence above is an example of a positive affirmation. They are simply positive statements or phrases that challenge a negative or critical thought that we are experiencing as a result of stress or anxiety. Examples of positive affirmations can be focused on self-esteem, like “I am an intelligent person” or “People like being around me,” or other statements can be focused on lowering stress like “I have studied for this final all semester” or “This situation is only temporary and will be over soon.”
There are many benefits of using affirmations in our daily lives. Affirmations have been shown to decrease stress, increase academic achievement, positively influence physical behavior, and lessen the significance of harmful or threatening messages or events.
